new spark cell site - Pakuranga

Hi All, Noticed another large multi armed mast being erected right next to a current standing spark mast in Pakuranga. The two towers almost look identical and are literally a stones throw apart. Seems a bit strange erecting a brand new tower when one already exists meters away? Anyone know anything about it? Will try and get a picture next time I drive past. Actual location - Cortina Place, Pakuranga Thanks

PSA / HELP: Spark's mobile data usage warnings are not reliable

Our Spark home phone and VDSL stopped working on the 5th of June at around 10am. I called Spark at lunchtime and the issue was fixed the next day. While the VDSL was down I decided to connect my laptop and iPad to the internet using the Personal Hotspot feature of my Spark mobile phone. Unfortunately it seems a background process on one of these devices was downloading a lot of data. I managed to use up my entire mobile data allowance for the month, and accumulate $100 of overage charges, within 24 hours. Once I realized that my allowance was gone I bought an additional data pack (6th June at 9:35am).Half an hour later, at 10:06am, I received three text messages at once - "You recently exceeded 50%/80%/100% of your included data". None of these messages came early enough to allow me to avoid going over my data allowance.Therefore:1. I was relying on the data usage warnings to avoid overage charges. I suggest you do not do the same.2. I have now received a bill which includes $100 of overage charges. Do you think Spark would be willing to remove these charges, given that their system failed to warn me of the situation until it was too late?

Spark's Huawei HG630b Configuration

I've just installed the Huawei HG630b as a replacement for the Technicolor 589nV2 and have been working my way through the configuration. On the Technicolor, I was able to telnet into the modem and change the default DNS Server settings in order to use OpenDNS. I can't do that on the Huawei - Ideas? (I'm able to telnet to the device, but the username/password combinations I have won't allow me access). On the Technicolor, I was able to enter a user friendly name for all the devices that were connected via Wifi and LAN cable and was also able to specify to always use the same IP address for that device. I see that on the Huawei I can set a permanent lease, which suits me, but I cannot see where I can provide a user friendly name for the connected device. (Its very useful when setting up a NAT!)Finally, I have a subdomain that I would like to use with DDNS. The Technicolor had a few more options for services, but the Huawei only has 1.. Although there is an option to 'roll your own', but I'm not sure if the settings are working. I'm using FreeDNSafraid.org with a username & password and have a Direct URL that keeps it updated. At this stage, these are the things I'm missing.. and I'd love to get them resolved and my config backed up and secured.Cheers...

Spark fibre install - do I have to pay $49 for phone to be connected in a different room to ONT?

Was just about to submit form for fibre installation and came across this issue. Currently, the vdsl router/modem is in a bedroom cupboard and phone is in a separate bedroom. I want the ONT to be installed where the router currently is (because I have other places in the house wired via ethernet to that point already) and I want the phone to be where it currently is - in a bedroom. Will I have to pay extra for the phone to be wired through the roof to the ONT?Thanks.

Huawei HG630b + Gigatown

Hi there,Just in the process of getting connected to fibre in the coming week or so.I have been sent a Huawei HG630b in the mail and expect a call from Chorus in the coming week (fingers crossed) to arrange an install date.As I'm in Dunedin I have signed up with Spark and their Gigatown promotion https://www.spark.co.nz/gigatown and start on the ultra fibre 100 plan until Spark offer the gigabit speeds.I can see the HG630b will cut it for now but my question is will I be sent an upgraded modem like the HG659 (or similar) when the gigabit speeds are launched? It seems a bit silly to send out a bit of kit with only 100mb ports on it as part of a Gigatown promo, especially when there is a model higher that handles gigabit lan.

Frustration - our attempt to have UFB fibre hooked up for our business

We have been getting increasingly frustrated trying to have Fibre installed at our new office through Spark. It seems that it is utterly impossible to get a straight answer, a reasonable estimate or any follow up/customer service. Emails go unanswered, phone calls only have a 50% success rate when wanting to talk to someone (leaving messages never gets a call-back). When we do get any word, we're given false promises and no follow-up as promised.Does anyone here know where I can go for help? It seems there's a lack of anyone to talk to except for the business hub people. Our timeline:Thursday May 7th:Initial call with SparkThey seemed pretty keenGave us a timeframe of approximately 3 weeks for up and runningFriday May 8th:Recieved sign-up formsFilled in paperwork, and sent back to Spark contactThursday May 14th:Got confirmation back that our application was 'in process'Thursday May 21st:Spoke to Spark guy on the phone. I was told that our application was with the 'Fibre Team', and that he had no additional info, other that our application was in the design phase. I asked if Chorus had done their initial site inspection (since I had no knowledge of them being on site), and was told that this had already been performed and our application was close to being past most of the hurdles.Tuesday June 2:Requested an update to the status of our connection - No replyWednesday June 3:Managed to speak on the phone to Spark contactHe mentioned that the process was being held up by the consent processCalled our building manager - they had no recieved any contact from Spark or Chorus. She reported that she was all too happy to sign anything and send it back immedately with no fuss.Had her fill out an additional consent from based on an old one and sent it to our Spark contact in hopes of speeding things up.Thursday June 11:Sent an email to Spark contact hoping to get an update - No replyThursday June 18:Emailed requesting an update - No replyMonday June 22:Chorus guy onsite at our new premisesHe claims to be doing a site inspection for the floor above our officeSince he was there, we get him to inspect our floor tooWe give him another copy of the consent form proactivelyTuesday June 23:I managed to get Spark contact on the phone. He reports having Chorus onsite is positive and says he will follow up in the morning and email me backWednesday June 24:No email or contact back from Spark contactSent another email to Spark contact, but did not recieve any reply.

Is there still possible to get a $0/month prepaid plan?

As per $subject?Looking at http://www.spark.co.nz/shop/mobile/mobile/plansandpricing.html the minimum would be the $9 plan.I would be keen in getting a standard pay per minute with nothing included (the credit used to be valid for 12 months).Thanks.

Voicemail charge when Roaming on prepaid

$

Hi,From: http://www.spark.co.nz/shop/mobile/internationalroaming/gettingreadytoroam.htmlPrepaid customers will receive a charge for any voicemail's deposited in their voicemail box while roaming, even if their device is switched off. This is charged at the standard per min rate for receiving calls while roaming. Alternatively, you can turn off voicemail while you're overseas by calling us.This means that I'll be paying per minute rate when someone leaves a message which is fine. Would it be correct to assume that the charge starts when the greeting message is being played? EG: I will pay for receiving a message even if the caller doesn't leave a message (hangs up during the greeting before the beep)? Thanks.

Spark Vdsl = False Promises & Lies

Had Vdsl installed by a technican on Monday morning which went for about 15 minutes before completing dying! Hours of frustrating phone calls to spark including over an hour on hold before getting the runaround from department to department then being put on hold again for another period of time before getting disconnected completely. Ringing back resulted in 50 minute wait plus the runaround again. Many excuses and false promises of technicians coming to fix the exchange due to wrong profiles to wrong ports, faulty wiring, blaming chorus...chorus blaming spark etc. Then promises of tickets being escalated with more techies booked. Then all of sudden tickets are cancelled. No communication! More phones calls to Spark...more lies! Phone calls to chorus they couldn't help. Thursday tomorrow and still No Internet! !!!! They have until 12:00pm tomorrow to fix this poor customer service or they lose our business! !!

Note: This is a watered down version of events...if I told the full story it would be unbelievable! !!!

Locked phone and Intl roaming

I have a friend that who against my advice bought an elcheapo Samsung candy bar from Spark earlier this year that because of it's low price is SIM locked. Yesterday while at Manukau Mall went to the Spark store and asked about roaming and was told that her phone would not work overseas.. Now she's worried. My understanding is that SIM lock just means you can't put a non Spark SIM into it and will not stop you from roaming when overseas..Correct??TIA.

Backup power for fibre / VoIP

Just read the review of the Constant Vigil Sentry Lite DC UPS Review on the home page. Will be interested to see a future comparison with the Fuelcube being offered by Spark as part of their fibreswitch initiative.

At first look it has similar battery capacity 7AH but is half the price !

Issue will be how Chorus / Spark will treat (for warranty etc) replacing the supplied PSUs for the ONT and Router with this unit. Also will the order require specifying the ONT / Router / Cordless Phone type being used to ensure correct cables are supplied - assuming if different types are deployed they may have different power input plugs.

Trouble using ASUS DSL-AC68U Modem/Router for Spark Fibre Broadband not in a copper line area

Hi,I live in the Mission Heights area of Auckland (had been on the fibre broadband trial since 2008), but when the trial ended in 2012, they changed the ONT to a new one. This meant I could no longer connect my Linksys Router direct to the Fibre WAN and had to use the Telecom Technicolor TG 587n V3. This is a very limited device (only one GB ethernet port) with low speed wi-fi. So I connected it to a Netgear D6300 router to get better results. The Technicolor is still limiting.I bought an ASUS DSL-AC68U modem router which the shop technical guys said it will connect to the Spark UFB.I need to work out how to set it up to connect to the internet.I have tried dual WAN settings, made the Ethernet Port 1 the WAN connection; used the third party Spark Fibre settings (http://www.spark.co.nz/help/internet/getting-started/broadband-settings-third-party-modems/)Although I cannot find any settings to change the Operating Mode; and the encapsulation, VID/VLan settings only applies when I set the router for DSL ->VDSL, not Ethernet WAN.Has anyone successfully used this modem router to connect direct to the Spark fibre broadband (not VDSL)?I only want to use a single modem/router device, not bridge two separate ones.Let me know if you need more information. Thanks in advance.CheersMatt

Problem using Spark HG630b

I'm trying to help my parents with their Spark HG630b router. A bit of background on the funny setup we have - I've just built them a brand spanking new pc to replace their near on ten year old xp pc. It turns out they have an accounting package on their old pc that costs hundreds of dollars to replace so we decided it was best to keep the old pc for the few times a year my father uses it. At the same time as this, my parents bought a new smart tv that they wish to stream lightbox on, so we upgraded them to vdsl (no fibre yet... sigh) and moved the connection and new router to the center of the house. So now we're connecting their old and new pc's to the router via wireless dongles. To try and save space I have tried to be smart and let them remote desktop onto their old pc from their new one.Now here is the problem, for some strange reason, I cannot ping between the two pc's using the machine name, instead I have to use the IP address - the same applies for connecting via remote desktop. After trying for hours to get this to work, I thought I would just reserve the local ip addresses and just save the ip address in a remote desktop shortcut.... but I cannot seem to find a way to do this. I'm sure the problem must be between the seat and keyboard, but for the life of me I cannot find any options to do this, and I cannot find any instructions online to do this. I even tried to save the ip addresses as static ip addresses (below the dynamic range of 192.168.1.65 that the router allocates new connections to) - this worked great apart from it stopped the computers accessing the internet full stop.So as it stands, whenever my father wants to access his accounting package I have to drive over and reconnect his pc up. I never thought I would see a worse router than their old thomson router telecom gave them, but this one trumps that and then some. This router is an utter turd, and it is incredibly poor that any ISP could ever ship such a piece of garbage out, the old d-links were a hundred times easier to use despite their limitations.Well, now my rant is out of the way, one other thing I should mention is that originally both pc's had the same computer name which caused obvious issues, so I renamed the new pc, but I wouldn't expect this to cause any issues anymore.I'm no expert on routing, but I can usually fumble my way around a router - but this one has left me stumped. I'm tempted to get them to buy a new router - or alternatively change providers to a company that doesn't send out such terrible bits of hardwareps - sorry for being negative and grumpy, spending hours on this sort of problem tests my temper.

VDSL or ADSL?

Hey guys.We just got our VDSL shifted to the new house, going from the Invercargill east exchange to one of the cabinets with voice from same exchange. We've got the Technicolour Telecom modem and it was in bridge mode from the old house. Once chorus connected it up yesterday the modem wouldn't connect to the cabinet while the test one the guy had did. I factory reset the modem and now have double-nat currently to give us internet. From going into the telnet, and googling the DSL standard its using, it appears to be on adsl. In the past it was using ITU-T G.993.2 standard. And the sync speed is extremely low considering the distance to the cabinet (even the chorus guy commented it should be better than the old house) and the attenuation. And putting the modem back into vdsl bridge it fails to connect again. Is it just me or from the info would it appear to be adsl not vdsl?Cheers in advance for any help :)Joys of moving :/Below is the telnet (trimmed) info, but I{Administrator}=>xdsl info expand=enabledPhysical Layer Statistics: Modem state: up Up time (Days hh:mm:ss): 1 day, 1:36:12 xDSL Standard: ITU-T G.992.5 xDSL Annex: Annex A Channel Mode: Interleaved Number of reset: 0 Chipset Vendor info (G.994.1): Local Remote Country code: B500 B500 ID: BDCM IKNS Specific: 0000 0001Bearers generic info DS US Payload rate [Kbps]: 17098 1016 Attenuation [dB]: 3.0 0.4 Margins [dB]: 12.0 12.7 Output power [dBm]: 0.0 12.6 Number of bearers: 1 Bearer 0 DS US INP [DMT symbols]: 2.13 0.00 Delay [ms]: 10.08 1.00 Depth []: 160 0.00 R: 16 0
