Would you recommend Bigpipe?

I'm moving to a new address soon and agonising over choosing an ISP. I want to get that high-speed 900/450 type connection. I've been doing as much research as I can stand, and I've read a lot of opinions, but I haven't actually found a lot of strong opinions at all about BigPipe. At the moment I'm thinking that it seems to cost $109 a month vs less than $100 for the same speed from a few other ISPs, which makes me curious.

What does my extra $10 a month get me?

Skinny Roaming in Fiji

Hi there,

Spending a few days for work in Suva. What a great idea, $20 for 7 days of calls and texts and a gig of data. Sweet, sort of. Calls and texts working well. Data isn't. 3 goes with Skinny support and they have given up on me offering my $20 back. Would really prefer to have access to the internet outside of my customer's office.

Any ideas? Nokia 5.1 running Android 9. Should be this hard should it?

Bigpipe Speed to dropped to 100/100

Something weird has happened to my gigabit connection. My speedtest results are all coming back at exactly (well almost) 100Mb/s both ways.

this happens no matter if I connect through various routers or direct with any machine connected to the ONT.

My speed was always faster than this but I can't seem to get Bigpipe support to understand the problem, they keep going on about PC specs and pretty much not reading the emails that state multiple devices are working fine locally and were working fine previously and now there is a problem.

to me it looks like a provisioning problem, but I have no idea how this could have changed

anyone go any ideas?

Static IP Address changed overnight

I've logged a ticket with Bigpipe and waiting for them to come back to me. Just curious if any other Bigpipe customers had this happen overnight.

I've been with Bigpipe for about 6 months now and paid for a static IP up front when I joined. Everything has been fine and I've had the same IP the whole time. Woke up this morning and I couldn't stream anything on my Apple TV. Checked DNS4Me and my IP address had changed over night. I haven't rebooted the router and no power cuts overnight. Even if I had would have expected the same IP address to be provided.

Anyone else have this?

So my wife who is on Skinny, is receiving messages from a couple of friends but when she replies it would not send. the iphone says "message send failure not delivered". She is also unable to call them, it returns a doo doo doo doo tone she says.

Only to TWO people. everything else is fine.

She is not on imessage (checked, yes it is off/disabled) and her mates are not using iphones.

Any ideas?

Changing Fibre plan

I joined Bigpipe fibre in February and had the 100 download 100 upload plan and I put a order on bigpipe website to change plan to 200 download and 20 upload on 13 March and so far the plan has not changed.

How long does it take for bigpipe to change my fibre plan and does it have to go through Chorus?

Measuring across a wired Ethernet interface on Chorus speed test.

It seems... a lot slower than I'd expect. This ought to be a pretty local roundtrip.

Warrants reaching out to support? I haven't yet as I suspect they're up to their ears at the moment and don't want to add to the burden...

Skinny B618S doesn't support 5GHz WiFi?

I just received my Skinny 4G broadband modem, I'm having trouble getting the 5GHz WiFi to show up even though it's enabled in Settings. Initially I thought it might be me screwing up the settings, but after restoring to factory default, the 5GHz SSID still doesn't show up on any of my devices.

Does anyone know if 5GHz is meant to work on Skinny?

Disabling Data Completely.

Hi

Is it possible to disable data completely on a Skinny number?

It will also be good if I could disable all promotional texts/notifications to my daughters skinny number for data or any other specials from skinny too.

I'm querying because this is for my daughters phone, we disable her wifi at 10:00pm every night but this does not work if she is still can still have access to data.

It seems she was able to purchase a "Data Binge Time" data package 1.5 GB. She is on the $9, 28 day plan. Her plan renews using my credit card every 4 weeks. It seems that my credit card was also used to purchase this "Data Binge Time" package.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Port shaping on SSH?

Anyone else noticed that Bigpipe / Spark appears to be shaping traffic on port 22 (SSH)?

I have a server in Europe which I often download files from using SFTP/SSH (port 22). Never had a problem until I noticed yesterday that my download speed appeared to be capped at 4mbps. Trying the same file over HTTP and it came down at about 200mbps (more in line with what I'd expect).

This morning, everything seemed to be back to normal but it seems to throttled again at the time of writing this (15:30).

I'm on the Elite plan.

Opt in for caller ID for specific call

Hi

I know you can opt out of caller ID for a specific phone call by prefixing the phone number with either 0197 or #31#.

What if you have disabled caller ID on your phone, but want to make a phone call where the recipient can see your number.

eg. Have caller ID disabled for most calls by default, but call a friend with caller ID still activated.

Is this possible?

Thanks

Request DHCP on Business Broadband UFB

$

Apologies in advance if this has been asked before..

On a Business Broadband UFB connection, can DHCP on VLAN 10 be requested as opposed to the standard PPPoE?

The reason I ask is that one our firewalls (FortiGate) does not apply hardware acceleration to traffic when you have PPPoE on the WAN interface.

DHCP on VLAN 10 would work better for us - just wondering if a special request can be made?

Cheers

Skinny Free Data Weekdays for April

Just got the following txt from Skinny:

"Hey there. We know how important it is to stay in the loop at the moment, which is why we're launching Free Data Weekdays for the rest of April.Between the hours of 9am and 5pm, we'll give you 1GB of free data each day from Monday to Friday. You don't need to do anything, just stay put and remain an active customer and we'll sort the data! Data doesn't rollover. /Skinny"

Thanks Skinny! Nice to see your compassion (in the current circumstances) for extra data has extended to mobile users, as well as the free data already given to wireless broadband users.Another reason to give Skinny a big thumbs up from me.

Poor game download performance

Can anyone at Spark explain why download performance has been exceptionally poor lately, specifically when downloading updates or new releases of major gaming titles.

Background:

Connection 1Gb, BigPipe Unlimited Fibre, Unifi USG, Nano HD Wireless (Wireless performance is excellent, both Xbox's using Wireless AC, connecting at 500Mb/s+)

Most recently this was seen last night with the Modern Warfare update.

On Xbox (wireless) - downloads started poorly - achieving around 3-4 Mb/s, but reduced regularly to sub 1Mb/s levels (<600Kb/s for minutes at a time). Pausing the download would see speed return to poor (3-4Mb/s) for a few seconds, then reduce again.

Another Xbox (wireless) on the same network saw ok performance and the download completed with 90 mins (slow, when compared to a non-congested download which would take <20 mins).

On the PC (Ethernet) a similar trend occurred - constant sub 10Mb/s download speeds, reducing to < 1Mb/s for long periods.

The problem was resolved on the PC by using ExpressVPN to connect to a Sydney server, which saw download speeds in the 70-100Mb/s range.

On the Xbox - it broke the game install after 4 hours and required a reinstall of the game this morning (averaging around 120Mb/s which is still slower than expected)

What's going on at Spark with localized caching (Akamai CDN, F5 GTS etc), and or Global Gateway performance. I understand Spark run express routes through to Sydney - but lately download performance has been abysmal during major game update releases.

Based on my experience by using ExpressVPN, it would appear that download traffic is being rate limited/throttled either locally at Spark or on the Trans-Tasman link, as once the VPN was turned on download performance returned to normal levels (normal for a VPN connection anyway).

To the best of my understanding, Spark used to cache this stuff locally, but it looks like this has been turned off, which would be OK if there was enough bandwidth at the provider level to cope - but it appears not (or its being throttled at Global Gateway to manage performance). I honestly haven't noticed if the same thing is happening with things like Apple iOS updates or if it specifically relates to gaming traffic.

Late nights update was only relatively small (13 GB on the Xbox, 16GB on the PC) - major updates lately have been much larger - performance has obviously suffered for a longer period.

This isn't a case of performance just being slow - its reducing to such a level that it breaks the game install process. I can't easily check packet loss/jitter etc. on the Xbox, but I suspect it was significant, i.e. packets being dropped, as opposed to reduced speeds. This further increases load on the network when you have to re-download the game at 80GB+ download, let alone wasting hours of time.

It's also not an issue that's going to go away - with game downloads regularly exceeding 20GB in size just for updates, full game release heading north of 100GB.

Hopefully someone can explain what's happening.

Offers for existing customers?

Been with BigPipe on the $79 100/20 plan for a couple of years now, no contract, but thinking of changing due to all the deals out there, especially on Gigabit plans.

I noticed BigPipe have a 3 month free offer but its for new customers, but BigPipe online chat told me I can't take that as I'm an existing customer, and when I said can I cancel and re-join they said no :)

So I'm curious, why don't they offer deals to existing customers, who instead would save money by walking to another ISP rather than keeping them on and offering the same price as new customers?
