Why do companies do this? It is like they are intentionally trying to be a pain in the...

Wanted to find out my broadband usage. Called and didn't want to spend 50 minutes waiting. Signed up to myspark login to find out usage now it says:

'If you've just registered for MySpark and added your account number, we'll automatically update your preference to ebill.' WHY? I don't want ebills and didn't get asked if I did. Can't see an option to change it only an option to change the email address they are sent to???

Spark Wireless Broadband Port Forwarding

I've got a friend who runs a local business in my suburb. Recently he switched to 4G wireless broadband at his shop and since then he's been unable to access a system remotely that runs internally in the shop. I figured it would need a NAT rule and sure enough there is a specific port to access the system.

I told him this and he went off and entered a rule in his router but it still wasn't working. When I went in this morning and had a look I could see it all looked correct to me. But when I tried browsing to the service from my mobile using the external IP and port it wouldn't resolve.

It's a Huawei B315 LTE modem. Does anyone know of any issues forwarding ports on this device or type of broadband service?

Can't Log Into Spark Webmail

Seems to be lots of issues today. Alexa/Amazon isn't working 100% , and now I can't log into my Spark email. It says, "Uh oh. Your password, or username, is incorrect. Please try again."

When I try the security question, it eventually comes up with, "Sorry - system is currently down. Please try again soon."

Not having a great day...

Being charged for 30days Fibre I can't use/they can't provide. What can I do?

Basic points:

Had 12 month contract when signed up, this ended 24th May 2018.

Switched to another provider, using their online signup (and a few calls confirming my Spark account number etc), and was connected with them several days prior to new billing period.

Part of that process was local provider, Enable, making some "physical" change. Until they made this change, I could not use my new provider. After the change, I am unable to connect to Sparks network.

My Spark app clearly shows 0MB used for this period.

So... How is it legal for Spark to charge me for a month of service that they have no earthly way of providing me?

In order to make the switch, I had to provide my Spark account number. I recall that for ADSL, as an example, there was a behind the scenes process for transfers where the new provider had to request the change, which was recieved by Spark/Chrous or whomever it was, and the account was then transferred. Very simple, and fair, and with checks in place to prevent avuse by both customers and cowboy providers... Why would this not be the case for fibre, in this day and age, given I've essentially followed the same process?

It seems very odd to me, and perhaps anti-competitive.

Upon contacting them about the mistake, they tell me I was meant to contact them to cancel, and there is a 30 day notice period. Even though I'm out of contract, and the above mentioned provess had happened (and I have clearly not been active on their network since). Even after the third email, they're still asserting I have not notified them of cancellation (whilst also not telling me how I should do that).

Let's run the scenario the way they're insisting:

I decide to switch to another provider (Reason is irrelevant, but I'm getting considerably more, for a bit less, elsewhere now)

In order that I avoid paying $104 more than I should have to with Spark, and switch without service interuption, I need to see the future to know how long the new provider will take to connect me... and plan my notification to Spark precisely to match that prophecy. E.g. It'll take them 3 days on the new side, so I notify Spark on 1st July, and time it out to sign up with the new provider on the 27th*

Given it took my new provider 12days to make the switch this month, after first stating it would take 3 days... Even if I had followed everyone's processes to the letter, I likely would have been without service for (at least) one week.

Even if I had managed to time it to the day, I would still be paying both providers for a portion of time on their network that I could not possible have used (given the Enable switch over thing).

* Imagine if I was trying to score a new deal being offerred, that had an expiry. "Sign up before XX Day for a $xx discount". Except I have to give 30days notice to Spark before I can accept the offer, otherwise I may as well not take it given the discount would be swallowed by the 30days I have to pay Spark anyway.

Surely that's not honourable, and smells like "let's make it really hard to leave us". Do I have a leg to stand on here?

Spark website fail

I'm fielding enquiries from a few locals who are stuck on ADSL & hadn't realized that they could get faster wireless broadband at a reasonable cost. Some had checked the Spark website for broadband availability at their address but that utility hasn't been updated to include wireless so always defaults to Yes! You can have the same old sludge connection as you've already got. Of course they took that as meaning their location wasn't suitable for wireless broadband.

So I went hunting through the Spark pages & found their dedicated wireless broadband location utility. Excellent, I thought, this won't be shoving ADSL options back at me. Here's the results:

*sigh*

Transitioned to Spark, but only connecting untagged?

Got a text from Enable saying my Fibre connection has been transition from BigPipe to Spark.

However, I can only establish a PPPoE connection when it is not VLAN tagged. If I set VLAN ID to 10 it doesn't work.

@cbrpilot are you able to help me out, as I'm a little confused? I thought VLAN 10 was a requirement for Spark?

Static IP - a question

I'm considering setting up my PC with a static IP address.

I'd thought this was a fairly simple process involving just a few settings in my adapter's configuration, but then I downloaded a Spark guide (a PDF from here - https://www.spark.co.nz/help/internet/set-up/technicolor-tg582n/ - from the 'Download Now link) which sounds far more complicated.

For a start it suggests giving your PC an IP of 192.168.1.10 (instead of anything between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.253, say).

And there's heaps more stuff about re-configuring the DHCP pool.

Comments please.

Speed drop by 1.5Mb/s

Yes, in the age of fibre for all I'm still on ADSL and will most likely never see fiber or VDSL.

For over a year now ive had a constant 6.3MB/s Down. It wasn't perfect but it worked however in the last 3-4 weeks we lost 1.5Mb DL speed. I can't seem to get above 5 now. That's almost a quarter of my bandwidth, and it hasn't gone unnoticed.

More concerning is the latency or more accurately the jitter. Sometime as high as 180ms. I can do multiple test and get massive variations in latency. This to is noticeable. Websites won't load for brief periods, TV streams just stop, servers disconnect and gaming is the worst with lagging/desync/server kicks. Only to come right shortly after for a while.

Before we all regurgitate the fault-finding list.

Yes, I've spoken to Spark help desk, twice. They tell me because the modem can see the full rate there is noting they can do.

- I've done a modem reset

- They did a port reset

- I've tried a different modem and cable

I use nPerf

I've done trace routs, outcome variable as per the latency

I have a master splitter installed and no other filters.

Hoping someone here may be able to give me a bit more insight/assitance with this.

Can you still get 3G/4G USB modem on Spark?

$

I have been looking through the Spark web site and I cannot find the 3G/4G USB modem any more. On trademe there are a couple of listings of Telecom T stick which are obviously quite old given they are labelled Telecom rather than Spark. Do they still work?

What I am trying to do is to have prepay mobile broadband while staying at a beach house we have access to. As we do not go there often enough we cannot justify paying for regular broadband, and we thought prepay mobile broadband on a USB modem so it can be shared via a wifi router would be the way to go.

Vodafone reception is poor there so Spark is really the only option.

Emails received as spam - Spark Customer only

Hey Guys,

I am having an issue where a friend of mine who owns his own business is sending out invoices and statement at the end of each month, the customers who are with spark (@xtra.co.nz email address) are not receiving this and a message is being bounced back to the sender advising the message was blocked due to spam content.

These emails are generated automatically from his invoicing software and are in plain text with a PDF attachment of their statement/invoice.

The message body and subject is similar to the below:

"Please see attached Invoice/Statement INVXXXXX"

Any ideas how to prevent this? Spark helpdesk have been no help. I have suggested he contact the technical support for the invoicing software to see if the format of the messages can be changed (We could not find any useful options in it's settings) but they have been refusing to help also and charge $85 per 15min for the privilege.

As far as we know this problem has only started in the last month or two.

The Invoicing software is called Synergy.

Spark to add port filtering for NetBIOS and SMB

$

Good morning everyone,

Just a quick heads up on a change we're making to our Broadband network to increase customer security. As per industry best practice we're going to start blocking the ports used for SMB and NetBIOS on our Broadband connections. Those protocols are fairly well documented to be insecure and should never be used outside your own LAN - i.e. never on the internet.

The specifics of the ports being blocked are:

Incoming TCP ports 135->139

Incoming TCP port 445

This was implemented for Wireless Broadband Static IP nationwide from day 1. It is now being progressively rolled out across ADSL/VDSL and UFB for Spark Broadband starting with Northland. We expect to complete the rollout within the next month.

If you have another application which uses these ports, we'd recommend that if possible you move it to using a different port.

If that is not possible you can always opt out of the filtering by following the opt out links at spark.co.nz/port25. If you get port 25 (SMTP) unblocked it will also unblock the ports above (the same profile blocks all of these ports).

Dave.

Do old landlines on my property belong to me or Spark? As in, could I take the copper feeding my former telephone connection up to the pole and sell it for scrap?

Asus RT-AC5300 won't connect/configure to my home Spark network

Hello guys,

Recently I had my Fibre completed and the ONT is flashing to show Fibre is connected, the current Huawei HG630b Gateway seems to run no problem. However I know the HG630b isn't that great so I've bought this new router. Been recommended it from lots. Read the reviews and it seemed like it was going to be amazing!

However no matter how hard I try I can't seem to make the light for WAN go from red to white. Red according to the manual means "No IP or no physical connection." White/On means "Has physical connection to a wide area network (WAN).

My router is the Asus RT-AC5300

The ethernet cable being used from the ONT to WAN port of the Asus RT-AC5300 should work, tested with HG630b, works no problems.I understand from the spark web page I'm supposed to use these settings below.

https://www.spark.co.nz/help/internet/set-up/non-spark-modem/

Operating Mode : MDI/MDIX

PPP Protocol : PPPoE

PPP Username: user@spark.co.nz

PPP Password: password

PPP Auth Type : PAP

Encapsulation : 802.1Q

PCP Marking : 0

VID (or VLAN) : 10

MTU : 1,500 or AUTO

I followed this guide for using these settings

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/ASUSISPSettings#SparkRTAC

Any suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks for the help :)

When is 24/7 not 24/7 ? When it is spark 24/7 tech support

So - business support for spark: They have a business support promise:

https://www.spark.co.nz/business/contactus/book-a-call/

"We are committed to help you find your business edge, our dedicated local business hubs and 24/7 technical fault assistance will help you keep it."

Call through to them. They are closed. Even spark internal cant get them as they are closed.

So what does 24/7 mean? Not 24 hours a day 7 days a week - that's for sure.

Spark - seriously - how can you get away with advertising lies? Here is a real new Low!!!!

As for 126 business. Open 8am until 8pm Mon to Fri - but closed at 6pm on a Wed. More bollocks and lies from Spark.

Just had spark door to door call. Told them they need to advertise someone else who isn't into fraudulent false advertising.

What is the activesync settings for spark business mail

Spark business mail offers active sync. (https://www.spark.co.nz/business/shop/get-online/businessmail/)

Sparks imap servers are not working well for clients with large number of folders (but under 1.4Gb of mail) We have reworked profiles, reconnected etc but folders are not showing or if they are then mail is not downloading / syncing. clients on latest outlook and spark fibre.

Going to get them on activesync as it works better with folders.

Sparks instructions for connecting are found here: https://www.spark.co.nz/help/mobile/device-help?page=device/samsung/galaxy-s8/topic/email/how-to-setup-your-email

and here: https://www.spark.co.nz/business/help/broadband/use-spark-business-mail/

no mention of active sync.

Four phone calls to Spark business over two days. Plus chat. Plus messages etc.. I have been hung up on, put on hold, not called back etc etc etc. Several frustrating hours later no joy. Called business line (126) and told they are shut but I should call back between 8am and 8pm Mon to Friday. Hmm I thought 6pm on a Wed might have fitted inside that time range but not at spark.

All I want is the server name to connect to activesync.

Spark - you need to:

1 - Train your staff. Activesync is not web mail. It is a mail protocol like imap, pop and smtp. (or a mail app based on an exe but as you use it on phones your advertising must be for the protocol)

2 - Dont tell me what plans offer active sync if I ask for the name of the server

3 - Get your people to call back when they say they will

4 - Tell your badly trained help desk folks how to get your clients connected to the service you are advertising and my clients are paying for.

5 - Fire your help desk staff for buggering off early or get your messages changed. You are not open 8am to 8pm .Same old crappy service as when it was still genii.

Why do business clients paying for mail services get poorer support than free home based mail service?

Door to door sales people.. Really Spark? I expect that from garbage tier outfits like Trustpower and My Republic, but I expected better of you.

I don't think I can in good conscience recommend you to anyone now, even the mum and dad crowd who I usually direct your way.

Etext 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable

Hi

At my work the office uses the Spark Etext service to text people when their job is ready. About 2 weeks ago, a couple of the computers wouldn't go there. Kept getting "

Service Temporarily Unavailable

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later."

I tried different web browsers & cleaning cache etc. No joy. Anyway, some days it works, others not. Had no joy with Spark. It's you, not us.

So used my Spark cellphone on cellular data and it works. Kill the cellular data and use the firms wifi and I get the 503 error message. So it is a problem with our 2 Degrees fibre connection I guess. Any ideas on this one? Doesn't really help that this is intermittant problem, but it isn't working on any of the computers today. Thanks in advance.

New Spark connection to non-residental address

Thought I'd ask the question on the forum so if anyone is in the same position then they know what to do.

I'm about to order a new connection (UFB with Enable/ONT to be installed) with Spark for a non-residential address.

It's a sports club on Council land (we own the buildings). Enable and Christchurch City Council have given me the thumbs up. The questions being, can I order a residential type connection? or does it need to be a business connection?

We are not a charity however we're classed as a GST Registered Non-Profit.
