What is the Fibre switching porting process?

$

Disconnected by the current provider due to my switch request to Spark.

What is the protocol here. Isn't the switch out provider supposed to leave supply on until some sort of confirmation is received?

Spark said they can't switch until they have an account number from the current provider. I did provide that account number and Spark advise that number is incorrect.

I ask the current provider they said no my account number is correct however they may actually be asking for the PID number . I gave Spark the ONT number and apparently this number also confirms my PID number. Current provider says Spark have the information needed.

This leads me to... what the hell went wrong. I've been dealing with Spark direct sales . As of right now I have no service. No lights on the ONT.

Can someone please escalate. Sales say the issue is with the porting team but keen for someone to investigate asap.

Cheers

Steve

WIFI Router options that work well on Spark UFB

Hi

I have the HG659G that work fine on connected PC speed test, but the WIFI seems patchy compared to my old Linksys WRT1900AC.

I also had some more features, such as media prioritisation and android app with the Linksys. However, good Wifi is the most important feaure.

Are there other alternative Wifi routers that work well on Spark UFB? (100/20 naked, unlimited plan)

Spark gigabit UFB in Christchurch

Just received:

Spark announces gigabit fibre testing in Christchurch Spark has announced today that it has started testing high speed gigabit connections over the Enable Ultra Fast Broadband (UFB) fibre network in Christchurch, meaning more people will be able to upgrade their speeds significantly. Gigabit connections utilise the maximum download speeds available on the UFB network today, and are around 10 times faster than the standard 100Mbps fibre. With Enable making the speeds available on their network, Spark has started testing its own residential and business customer equipment across a variety of scenarios through the Enable lab and into the Spark core network, to ensure the speeds can be achieved consistently. In August 2014, Spark called on the Local Fibre Companies and Chorus to work together to roll out gigabit speeds nationwide, and for more consistency with inputs and speeds to avoid confusion. Spark Head of the South Island, Paul Deavoll, is pleased to see that happening, particularly with another South Island city joining the ranks of gigabit-enabled areas. 'We know that data use in New Zealand is climbing, particularly for those on high-end unlimited data connections, and gigabit fibre connections will be desirable for those power users who aren't satisfied by the current fastest connections that top out at 200Mbps. 'To put it into perspective, in ideal conditions on the fastest connection available today, you can have 10 Ultra-High Definition 4K videos streaming at the same time - that's the highest quality streaming available and it chews through serious bandwidth and data. On a gigabit connection you could boost that up to 50 streams at the same time and not skip a beat. 'This is great innovation from Enable who have worked hard to be able to deliver 180,000 Christchurch homes and businesses more speed and capacity, and we're looking forward to making it available to customers, and to working with more fibre companies to make these speeds available to more people across New Zealand,' said Deavoll. Once the initial testing is complete, Spark intends to run a limited customer trial, commencing in a few weeks' time, to confirm that the high speed connection delivers the anticipated speeds in customer homes and businesses, ahead of a commercial release in the future.

Will Spark replace a potentially faulty router?

$

As described in this thread, I have been suffering frequent disconnections (sometimes more than a dozen per day) of my Spark VDSL for the last two months. I now suspect the router (a "Technicolor TG589vn v2", supplied by Telecom in January 2014) may be the cause of the disconnections, due to:

i) In the last few days, the router has spontaneously rebooted a few times, and

ii) Chorus have worked to improve the line on two separate occasions, but the disconnections are now worse than ever.

Spark have asked whether I have a different router to try - unfortunately I do not. Can I convince Spark to send me a replacement router (or even to lend me one in order to diagnose whether the fault is with the router or with the line) even though I cannot be sure that my current router is faulty?

If not, what other approach can I take in order to get this issue investigated thoroughly?

Questions about Spark Ultra Fast Fibre (HELP ASAP)

Hi there,

I am wanting to ask some questions before I proceed to get Ultra Fast Fibre. I have just recently moved into this house not to long ago and I'm surprise that this house use to have Fibre(Seeing as though there is a Fibre ONT box in the garage). Now all I got to do is just call in for the technicians to flick the switch from ADSL to Fibre and all done :) according to this post (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=165640). However I have some questions to ask before doing this.

1. I was wondering I would like to connect my modem router to the Fibre ONT. But since my modem router is upstairs and the Fibre ONT is downstairs in the garage, how would a technician find a way to connect my modem router that is upstairs to the Fibre ONT that is downstairs in the garage..?? I really need to know this as I really want to use my modem router for Fibre connections..

P.S. I have this possibility but I'm not sure if this works but I'm pretty sure there is a thing called ''powerline networking'' that the technicians could use to the the modem that is upstairs to the ONT that is in the garage. But, the question is will the technicians do this since after all Fibre connections are free to install so I'm pretty sure this is powerline networking method is covered by the free installation.

2. Seeing as though this post (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=165640) says that since Fibre is already installed, now all is needed is for a technician to switch/flick it on which does not require the technician to go inside/come to my house. Is this true? I can see a lot of people saying it is and a few saying perhaps..

Thanks

Random DTMF Tones during voice calls on Spark Wireless Broadband

$

Spark have started selling Wireless Broadband with a voice connection to clients in small towns

which dont have fibre.

An interesting issue seems to happen where you get random DTMF Tones every so often during a call.

Its the party that is not using the voip over wireless broadband that hears the DTMF tone ( or beep if you want to call it that )

Its fairly random how often it happens but does seem to be when the female at the other end is talking.

Doing a quick google on it I see it's a phenomenon called "talk-off".

To put it simply, random tonal qualities in regular speech will trigger the DTMF generator in theTA to produce a 'touch-tone'. It's been said female voices (or voices with more 'highs') do it more then male voices.

Does anyone have a suggestion how one can speak to the right person at Spark to see if they can adjust the

minimum and maximum duration thresholds for the DTMF side of things as I suspect the main support desk is just going to go Huh?

Troubleshooting connection between spark users

I regularly need to connect between myself and another spark user, both of us are in the Wellington region and both are on fibre.

Usually I would connect to this other user via a ddns address, and can usually do so without a problem.

Recently I have been unable to connect via ddns or but can fine via ip address. I have tried it from multiple devices from within my network.

As soon as I turn on my vpn I can connect to them again via the ddns route, and their ip address.

They have paid ddns hosting so expiry is not an issue.

Any ideas why this might be happening?

Wideband Audio Codec - Invercargill

As an audio nut I noticed this yesterday.

It has been a nice surprise in the last few days to be getting wideband audio codec calling in Invercargill between Spark mobile customers.

I noticed calls even to Palmerston yesterday were wideband as well. A good 8-10KHz or better.

We're probably one of the last towns to get it but it sounds great. So much easier to hear people when half their audio frequencies aren't cut off.

Sour experience with Spark.

First off.

I hate Spark Sylvia park.

This whole Galaxy Note 7 experience has been distasteful for me, I'm regretting the purchase already.

On Thursday, my phone started acting up, it was randomly freezing and it was stuck in a bootloop until I got help from geekzone members, I went to Spark's Sylvia park store to get it sorted, a customer rep couldn't figure out what the problem is and advised me of letting the phone drain and that I could bring the box and contents back tomorrow (26 August) to get it replaced.

Today, I head back to the Sylvia Park store, the customer rep there didn't even want to help. The phone is within 7 days of purchase but I get treated like a customer in the last week of warranty. They told me that I have to give them the phone, send it in to Samsung so they can "repair" my brand new phone and the entire process will take 2-3 weeks.

I ask them why they can't be flexible, they just give me a straight up "No, we have to send it in to get it fixed". The last time I had a problem with my iPhone, Apple promptly sent me a new phone along with a return label box for me to get the old phone back to them.

Fine, I thought, then I ask them to initiate the process. They quickly inspect the box and told me the charging cable is missing (yes it was my fault, I forgot to take it with me) and sent me on my way home.

Later in the afternoon, I took some time off to head down to the Samsung place in Albany and decided to try my luck with the Albany Spark store. The Samsung store found out some issues related to Abnormal S/W Reset. The phone was randomly restarting multiple times a day. Again, they couldn't replace the phone because I didn't technically buy it from them.

Then I head to the Albany Spark store. I demonstrate the problem to one of the customer reps, they said they can't replace the phone and they need to send it in. I took the deal because at this point I'm spending too much energy than I need to on a phone. She took down my details and I handed over the phone, she didn't want the box, she didn't want the charging cable. (ARE YOU KIDDING ME SPARK SYLVIA PARK?).

All in all, $1600 down (although interest free payments), I end up with a Galaxy J1 for 3 weeks.

I'm done with Samsung. I'm probably done with Spark too.

3G / 4G network gateway

$

Hi All,

We have a customer that has moved from 2Degrees to Spark.

The used 3G network gateways for their remote sites.

They do not want to use fixed line DSL for various reasons and need at least one network port for MFC devices.

Does anyone know of anything that will do 3G 850MHZ or 4G 700 / 1800

We have thought of the B315 from Skinny / Spark but they are locked down to 4G and 4G is not available on all sites. ( Spark will not sell us these anyway unless be get the BoLTE product which our customer does not need )

The devices will be located in an aluminium portacom or in the basement of a house so having an external antenna port available if needed is also a requirement.

There are lots of devices out there but the vast majority will not work on the Spark network.

We are hoping someone has something cost effective that we dont know about yet.

Thanks

John

Spark price increases, broadband allowances increase

$

Just received:

Spark has announced today that the majority of its home and many of its business broadband customers will receive up to 50% more data on their plans.

Jason Paris, CEO of Spark Home Mobile and Business, explains, 'Customers are using more data in their daily lives. Average data usage on Spark's broadband networks grew by 37% in 2014 and by 67% in 2015. From streaming their favourite shows, to video calling their families, there's a clear trend for increased data usage across the board. We're therefore changing our plans to include data allowances that reflect their changing needs at a competitive price.'

The majority of Spark's broadband customers will receive more data from the new plans. Home customers on a 40GB plan will receive a data increase to 60GB and those on an 80GB plan will get an increase to 120GB, across ADSL, VDSL, fibre and wireless broadband. Business customers on 30GB bundles will receive a data increase to 50GB and those on 80GB plans will get an increase to 120GB, across ADSL, VDSL and wireless broadband.

Simplifying Spark's broadband plans

With the growing number of internet access options - ADSL and VDSL over copper, fibre and wireless broadband - customers have been telling Spark that the range of broadband plans has become harder to understand.

Mr Paris says, 'Spark has simplified pricing and data allowances across our broadband plans. This means that the cost of our Home fibre and Home and Business urban wireless broadband plans is now aligned to the cost of our Home and Business copper plans - and that customers can easily compare and select the best broadband connection available to them at their place.'

Price increases for a small minority of customers

Looking at the overall picture, around 85% of Spark Home customers and over 99% of Spark Business customers will either receive additional data at no extra cost - or won't be affected by these changes. However, Spark are introducing price increases for a small proportion of broadband customers.

As more customers use more data - and more customers move to unlimited plans - the cost to provide broadband services has increased. First, the wholesale charges that ISPs like Spark pay lines companies on connections is increasing annually. Second, Spark has been investing in increased local and international data capacity.

Mr Paris explains, 'Plan simplification and future proofing of our costs mean that Spark will be raising prices on some of our Home fibre and wireless broadband plans by $5 per month - and on some of our Business wireless broadband bundles by $3 per month. However, we won't pass these costs on to Home customers until September 2017 and Business customers until September 2018: although they will see the new price on their bill, they will also see a credit covering the increased price.'

This will only impact a small minority of Spark's broadband customers - and half of these impacted customers will also receive a data increase.

Postponing the cost to existing customers for at least 12 months

These changes come into effect from 6 September for any new customers. However, to help existing customers transition to new prices, Spark will cover this cost until September 2017 for Home customers and September 2018 for Business customers, no matter when they started their contract. All customers who are on a plan with a price increase will receive a credit on their bill for the same amount, so they won't feel the additional cost.

Trouble setting up PPPoE on HG659b

Hi,

I am trying to set up a PPPoE (Long story as to why but that's beside the point) all weekend but I cant seem to get it to work. Ive called spark and they gave me the account name as: user@spark.co.nz and the Password as: password, but that did not work. I am not sure what I am doing wrong because when I was over in Brisbane it took me about a minute to set it up on an iinet connection (albiet a rubbish aussie DSL connection. I have posted picture below of what settings I have and what error message arises. I have a fibre100 connection. Any help would be hugely appreciated, I would literally give you a virtual hug.

Prices on Fibre up $5 6 Sept

It said in email because cost of delivering boardband has increased.

I've heard nothing in news about cost of wholesale fibre going up?

Also had as long as stay at on same plan and same address $5 discount will be applied until Sept 2017.

Have prices of fibre really increased or are they sneaking in a $5 charge for Lightbox?

Ping Spikes and Packet Loss

$

For awhile now I've suffered constant lag spikes and packet loss while trying to play online games. In the game Warthunder I used to get a solid 150-200 ping and could play no problems but now it will jump up to 350-550 often and the Packet Loss ranges between 2-6% causing all kinds of weird laggy behavior. Are there things I can do to try and fix this or do I need to call Spark? I recently had a nice new router installed so it shouldn't be that.

Thanks for any help!

Port 21 issues with Technicolor TG589vn v2

Hi guys,

I'm having some seriously confusing issues with my Technicolor TG589vn v2. It's the router we were provided by Spark back when they were still Telecom, and I'm having issues with port forwarding. When I try to use any FTP program like Filezilla, the transfer will begin and build up speed for a few seconds before stopping, timing out, then resuming and repeating the cycle until it finally completes (only it takes much longer than it should because of all the timing out and resuming). I think this is due to a port issue, since I checked my port 21 online and it says it's closed. I've tried forwarding port 21 on my router but it doesn't seem to actually work. What am I missing here?

Slow YouTube on VDSL

I've been getting really slow YouTube speeds over the past 2 days (I'm on VDSL). Has anyone else been getting this? Basically can't watch 720p without pauses, could stream 1080p fine for the past couple years. Tried rebooting modem etc.

Speed test shows my average down speed has dropped from 33 to about 26Mbps, should still be enough to stream... I've contacted Spark but they say everything looks normal :/

Lags on my pc, sons phone and granddaughters tablet.

Or dies altogther.

Spark "reset it at their end" so they say. Didn't help.
